Risks to health - by inhalation of airborne contaminants

Hazards from Laser Generated Airborne Contaminants (LGAC)

The interaction of the laser beam with target materials may produce toxic dusts, vapours or gases called LGAC. Here is a basic list of known hazards which may be irritants to the respiratory system, can cause illness or at worst are carcinogenic.

Processing of Metals
Can cause the emission of hazardous vapours into the plume, as complex compounds or ions of chromium, nickel, molybdenum to name a few.

Processing of Plastics
Can cause emission of benzene, polycyclic hydrocarbons, toluene, styrene and HCl.

Processing of biological materials including human skin
Can release benzene, formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide, biological fragments, bio-aerosols, dead and live cellular matter, even viruses.

Caused by the contamination of the laser optics due to condensation of vapours or deposition of particles and/or due to reduction in the power of the laser beam due to the amount of airborne contaminants in the path of the beam.
